Welcome to West Bonner County School District 83

MEMORANDUM

To: WBCSD Employees & Community Members

From: Jackie Branum, Superintendent

Date: November 13, 2022

Subject: Transportation

The objective of this memorandum is to provide clarification to the challenges the West Bonner County School District (WBCSD) transportation department is currently facing. The purpose/mission of the WBCSD transportation department is to provide transportation services for students to safely get to and from school, and extracurricular activities, thus ensuring outstanding educational opportunities.

PROBLEM: The WBCSD is challenged with a progressively worsening bus driver shortage.

Despite advertising for bus drivers and/or substitute drivers in local papers, on the Internet and school reader boards, and by word-of-mouth, WBCSD has been unable to find and hire additional drivers. Such a shortage is a problem around Idaho and across the country.

IMMEDIATE CONCERNS

LAST YEAR: WBCSD dealt with a progressively worse bus driver shortage intensified by COVID.

CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR: Beginning this school year, the driver shortage became even more dire and here’s how:

  • Five (5) of the WBCSD’s normal routes had to be canceled.
  • Not always having drivers available to drive students to sports events and/or other after school activities. Some games had to be canceled because of this. (WBCSD reached out to other districts and bus services for help but shortages are everywhere.)
  • In the past month, the situation has gotten worse. We have had people step in to help address the crisis we are currently facing in being unable to offer transportation services to our students.

SOLUTION: The WBCSD has exceptional bus drivers. Our drivers have done everything within their power and efforts to transport children safely for school and extracurricular activities. Our current drivers are critical to the solution. We need and appreciate our current drivers. However, we still do not have drivers to fill all normal routes or transportation requests. We need more drivers.

Short-term: Working with a contractor to help alleviate the District’s current crisis.

Long-term: Looking for a long-term solution, gathering information on all options, including, but not limited to, contracting services.

The goal in finding a solution to the problem the District faces is to provide the greatest benefit to our students, employees, parents/guardians, community members, and all stakeholders.  The WBCSD is eager to find a solution so that the focus can be redirected to the WBCSD’s number one priority - the education of our children.
